Plastic Free July Competition & Recycling in Acton

Reduce and Recycle hub is returning to Acton Market on Saturday 6 July. We have some great organisations joining us, so please pop along and lets together reduce, reuse and recycle in Acton. Our hub aims is to encourage people to reduce waste and recycle more in Acton and surrounding areas. We invite along some great organisations and volunteers involved in reducing, reusing items and recycling in Acton. The hub runs monthly on the first Saturday of the month. New in July

Plastic Free July Competition

Plastic Free July is on its way and are delighted to launch a competition in honor of this. We want to encourage as many of you as possible to make a change when it comes to using single use plastic.

This could be swapping:

  • Plastic wrapped pasta for pasta in a box
  • Laundry detergent in a plastic bottle for laundry detergent in a box
  • Shampoo in a bottle for shampoo bars
  • To inspire you we are offering a prize to one lucky winner!

To enter, you must either:

  • Post a picture of yourself and your swap on social media tagging us at on Instagram @marketw3 or Facebook @marketw3
  • Visit us on 6th July at our Reduce and Recycle hub at Acton Market and bring along your SWAPS.

All entrant names will then be entered into the raffle to win and the winner picked at random on 31st July at 1pm.

NOTE: All online submissions must show you and your swaps and you must tag Instagram @marketw3 or Facebook @marketw3 in the post. For in person submissions they must attend the hub with both items.

Preloved bikes on sale & bike

At July’s hub, ReActon will be selling a fantastic selection of high-quality pre-loved bikes for both adults and kids. It’s a great opportunity to find the perfect ride for you and your family. Plus, you’ll get to meet our friendly team and learn more about cycling in our community.

ReActon bike stall will also be offering FREE tyre and chain checks and low cost bike servicing where you would be charged for the parts used.

Want help to get cycling or walking? The Walk and Wheel W3 hub based in Friary Park estate close to Acton Main Line (beside the Friary Park community centre) run by Sustrans. The Sustrans team will be at the Reduce and Recycle hub on Saturday 4 May if you want to talk about how you can travel more actively to benefit your health and the health of the planet. The W3 Hub is for anyone who wants to make more walking and cycling journeys. In Friary park hub you can borrow a cycle, talk about quiet walking and cycling routes, receive some training or guidance on riding a bike.

Reduce and Recycle Hub activities

At our monthly Reduce and Recycle hub at MarketW3 we have a great variety of organisations. These will help you recycle, as well as repair and reuse at Acton Market and beyond:

RECYCLE:

Bring and recycle in Acton your old and unloved:

  • Clothing, Shoes and accessories for donation to TRAID www.traid.org.uk/wlwa (10am – 2pm)
  • Small electrical appliances (10am – 2pm). These must be small –small enough to fit in a shopping bag to TRAID, see details www.traid.org.uk
  • Recycling and waste advice from Juliet at Recycle Challenge from ActforEaling and Ealing Council Waste Team, sharing tips and advice.

Ealing Council Waste team will be there giving advice on the doorstep recycling in Acton and food waste collection. Find more tips and information here https://www.instagram.com/ealingrecycles/

  • Book Swap – Bring a book and take a book, with Churchfield Community Association
  • Seed Swap – Cultivate London will be on site with seeds to swap or take away.
  • ReActon bike stall sells pre-loved serviced bikes for great prices. Come and get a brilliant bike at a reduced price.
  • Grab a bargain at our stall holders many who sell returns and seconds from the high street at a reduced price choose from sportswear, womenswear and menswear.

Plus there’s more: Our tasty local foodie stalls will be onsite so you can sample the flavours of Ghana, India and Lebanon.

Special Guests and Activities

Join us and our friends and local community groups:

  1. Cultivate London will be on site with plants and seeds. They also will share information about their green spaces and the Acton Green composting project https://www.spacehive.com/acton-green-waste-solutions
  2. Mindfood will be at the hub from 10 am – 1 pm. Mindfood teach food-growing courses to connect people with nature and their community, and share practical techniques to nurture better mental health. So if you yourself or know anyone who may need help with stress, depression, anxiety or isolation get in touch. They run sessions 6 days a week and also run art sessions and garden diy groups, see Latest Courses.
  3. Ealing Friends of the EarthAt the hub from 10-12.30. Updating us on the local issues and campaigns around air pollution, climate change, nature and biodiversity.

So, come along to Reduce and Recycle hub and join the growing community of people who are reducing, reusing and recycling in Acton more. While you are there grab a bargain from one of our traders as many sell end of line stock or returns, knowing you will be helping reducing waste as well as saving money.

Reduce and Recycle Hub successes!

At the Reduce and Recycle hub see our Reduce and Recycle Hub 2023 review and so far we have achieved:

  • 599kg of unwanted clothes and shoes saved from landfill by Traid, which reduced carbon emissions (CO2) by 8.40 tonnes and water savings of 711m3.
  • 163 kgs of small electrical items collected and recycled.
