The Acton Market Reduce and Recycle Hub won the prestigious BBC London Radio Make a Difference Green Award. Held at BBC Radio Theatre in Broadcasting house, the 2024 Award ceremony hosts were Gaby Roslin and Eddie Nester. Here is the feature on the London news with a video short on the London market recycling hub hoping to reduce waste. Our Reduce and Recycle hub has been running since October 2022 and managed by Action West London. The hub is where local volunteer groups come along to promote reducing waste and sustainability in Acton and surrounding areas.
Here at Acton Market Reduce and Recycle Hub we help residents foster a more waste free lifestyle in the W3 community. Everyone has the opportunity to reuse, repair, and recycle items at the Hub. This has helped to divert waste from landfills and reduce the environmental footprint of the community. Winning this Green Category is a recognition that highlights the Hub’s significant contributions to environmental change in Acton.
“We were delighted to win the BBC Radio London Make a difference Green Award. It recognises all the effort and time the volunteers put into the Reduce and Recycle hub. We rarely get to celebrate what we do at the hub so it was lovely to be invited to BBC Broadcasting house. Usually we are busy speaking to the public on how we can do more with what we have and reduce our waste. The Reduce and Recycle hub volunteers are crucial, they are the cogs that make it happen. The activities at the hub are simple actions like book swaps, dropping off clothes for Traid charity, learning to mend clothes. These are things we can all engage with and make society less wasteful. Our hope is by leading the way it will open up more conversations with friends and family, resulting in our impact being far reaching.”

Winning the BBC London Radio Make a Difference Green Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers. They have made the Acton Market Reduce and Recycle Hub a success. This award serves as an inspiration to continue our efforts to create a more sustainable future for generations to come. As we left Broadcasting house, we caught a glimpse of the news studio and the One show rehearsing for their show later.

Our inspirational Volunteers
Here is what some of our Reduce and Recycle Hub volunteers had to say about winning the Award:
“People can be very anxious about dealing with waste, so I was pleased to be able to help with useful tips, I was also encouraged to meet so many residents – including my fellow volunteers – who care so passionately about the planet.”
Juliet McDonald who looks after Act For Ealing’s Recycling Challenge
“For Ealing Friends of the Earth it is important to be visible in the neighbourhood. People respond much better to personal contact than just seeing something on the internet, and they are more willing to support or join our local group if they meet some of the existing members. Winning the Green Make a Difference award is a great achievement for the hub, and should make people more aware of it and of the work by the voluntary groups who attend.”
Donald Power, Ealing Friends of the Earth
